What is Biodynamic Craniosacral Therapy?

Biodynamic Craniosacral Therapy (BCST) is a unique holistic hands-on touch therapy.  There are two important core concepts in this therapy.

  1. Our body is born with the intelligence that continuously strives at maintaining health and balance, it stays with us throughout life even through times when we are challenged with health issues.  And;
  2. There is a life potency (the cranio word for energy or chi), a vital force running through our body that carries this intelligence.

These concepts are found in many traditional systems of medicine where the main focus for healing is placed on encourageing a balanced distribution of the viatl energy of the body.  The intention of BCST is to listen in to the body and to encourage the flow of this potency so that health can be supported and restored.

Flow of Potency

This potency is called the "Breath of Life".  The name was coined by Dr. William Garner Sutherland, an osteopath of the late 19th century.  He discovered that every part of the body expresses subtle involuntary rhythms, a tide-like motion, and he termed it "Primary Respiration" (in the craniosacral context, lung respiration is called secondary respiration.

Primary Respiration is the expression of the Breath of Life and can be palpated.  If balanced rhythms are produced, it is a sign that the Breath of Life is present in a healthy system.

How does BCST work?

Throughout life we experience stress and minor and/or major traumatic events.  Often our bodies and minds can cope, get through them and restore balance.  There are times however when the experience is too overwhelming and we can't deal with it; we go into fight or flight mode, or we freeze.  These experiences can be trapped in the body and the mind as imprints and memories and they create physiological effects.  These are called patterns of experiences or sites of inertia.

Patterns of experiences can be created by:

  • physical trauma
  • birth process
  • nutrition
  • emotional trauma
  • belief systems
  • environment
  • and hereditary factors

They form when the potency of the Breath of Life is unable to dissipate the effects of the overwhelming experience.  These sites disturb the natural flow of the Breath of Life i.e. the expression of Primary Respiration which can then be expressed as symptoms of pain, tension, fatigue or disease.

BCST can help the held experiences in someone's system dissipate in a slow and contained manner.  The practitioner's subtle palpation skills can facilitate the client's body and brain to connect deeper with its inherent health and access its own ability to regulate.  This can help the held experiences to be brought into a new relationship with the Breath of Life and to be resolved wihtout revisiting the original traumatic event.

Chiropractic primarily focuses on diagnosing, managing and preventing mechanical disorders of the musculoskeletal system.  This covers a wide range of conditions from a simple muscle or ligament sprain/strain to a hot and raging disc bulge.  Chiropractors are highly qualified healthcare professionals who have studied at university for at least 5 years to recognise and treat various conditions.  When something does not fit within their scope of practice they acknowledge and refer you on to the relevant health professional.

Drug Free

Chiropractic offers a drug free modality of treatment which is generally considered safe, gentle and conservative (a small proportion of people may experience some adverse reactions).  While it is easy to pop a pill to reduce pain and inflammation it may only be masking the pain and not getting to the root of the problem.  There might be underlying issues which may cause the pain to reoccur again later down the track and become more and more frequent.  And of course the adverse affects of ongoing continued use of over the counter non-steroidal anti-inflammatories causing ulcers to the lining of the stomach.

Surgery Free

Chiropractic also offers a surgery free modality of treatment, an option to keep joints going for as long as bearingly possible.  While advancements in technology and medicine have been great it is still important to know the success rate percentage on certain procedures before you make an informed decision.  Of course each individual will be treated according to their own scenario.  And a discussion and agreement with your Chiropractor on the different modalities and period of your trial of care will give you a clear indication of what to expect and when you will be referred on.
